ASL Adult Education Society

"First in Scholarship and Leadership."

The Alpha Sigma Lambda Adult Education Society was created in 1983 by a group of adult educators who were active in the ASL National Honor Society. The purpose of the Society is to secure, manage and distribute funds for scholarships, publications, projects and related activities beneficial to adult and continuing education.

Currently, the Society awards five annual general chapter scholarships of $1200 each and one of $1500 plus two annual Triangle Club: Second Century scholarships in the amount of $1500 each. Since 1983, more than $122,000 has been awarded to over 148 recipients. Scholarship applications are mailed out to all chapter councilors in January, with awards being announced in June.

Rogers Named Director of Adult Learning

George Rogers, of Berea, has been named the Director of Adult Learning at Baldwin-Wallace College.George Rogers

In this position, he will provide strategic direction and leadership for the College’s Evening/Weekend and Summer programs on campus and at B-W East, Baldwin-Wallace College's center for adult learning in Beachwood.

Before to coming to Baldwin-Wallace, he was the Assistant Dean of the School of Continuing Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Indiana, Pa.). In this position, he oversaw all undergraduate continuing education programs, including part-time studies, off-campus studies and distance education.  Prior to that position, he served as the Director of Continuing and Professional Education at Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.).  His past experience also includes 19 years at Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.), where he was named Chief Executive Officer for Continuing Education.

He is a member of the Association of Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) and Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for evening/weekend college students.  An active member with both organizations, he has held national offices and has earned recognitions, including being a two-time regional recipient of ACHE’s Innovative Programming Award.  In addition, he is active with church and community organizations.

Rogers earned a bachelor of science degree in English and Philosophy from Boston State College and a master’s degree in English from Boston College.

"Friends of William C. Hine Endowed Scholarship" Campaign

In 2002, Alpha Sigma Lambda executive officers and chapter representatives from member institutions established a distinguished service award, named it in Dr. Hine's honor, and chose him as it's first recipient to show their appreciation for his continued service to the Society and to adult students nationwide. The William C. Hine Distinguished Service Award honors Chapter Councilors for their commitment to promoting lifelong learning, dedication to serving adult learners, and leadership to the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society.

Fund Raising:

Each year the Society engages in regular and special fund raising efforts. Of primary importance to our fund raising are the sale of the ASL Honor Society pins and honor cords, whereby a portion of the sale of each pin and honor cord is donated to the Society. Other fund-raising endeavors include the Society Triangle Club: Second Century Plan, contributions by chapters and others, endowed scholarship opportunities, bequests and gift annuities
